Back in Jan 1985, when I arrived in Christchurch to attend Canterbury Uni, the mosque was being built, at the raft stage. A few workmen were onsite, the foundation has been laid, but the concrete raft floor has just been laid. It was still wet. We performed Friday prayet in a small room in the stable building behind the mosque. There were less than 15 of us, including 2 ladies for the first Friday prayer that I attended. We were close back then. Our first imam was Br Osman Gaafar, a post grad student from Sudan. Some of us, including me, still in contact with his family. Later in the year, in August, the construction of the mosque was finished. It was the southernmost mosque in the world back then, and the size was comparably bigger than the Ponsonby mosque in Auckland. The late Dr Saleh AlSamahi, was instrumental in getting a large donation from Saudi royal family. Let me remind you, that our first Islamic Centre was at 534 Tuam Street. A 2-bedroom house with a small lounge that we used as prayer hall. Our Muslim Community raise money by selling ethnic foods at markets and collecting donations. Why am I writing all these? I have been part of Christchurch Muslim Community for a long time. I know most of the old timers who have been the pillars of our community since the 70s. Quite a few of them have passed away. May Allah grant them Jannah. Now is the election time to choose the office bearers who will continue the legacy of our pioneers back in the 70s and 80s. What are the qualities of people do we want to lead us in the next 2 years? I would start with: 1.Integrity. 2.Transparency; clear communication, yes please be transparent to all our community members. Dont set up cliques and decide among your cliques on important issues, and then buldoze that decision without agreement from other committee members. And please write down the minutes of your committee meeting and publish them. 3.Communicate with us, our Muslim community. Write us email and newsletter, please. As well as publishing in website and facebook. Not all of us have access to facebook, so printed newsletter is still relevant. 4.Ability to write. May sound basic, but it is essential that our leaders knows how to put pen on paper, and be able to communicate with ease. We dont want people who is all talk and no action, do we? 5. Knowledge. Let's give the job to people who have the right talent and knowledge. 6. Able to devise a strategy to achieve goals. 7. Organisational skill. This is not just relevant to the president, but also to everyone else in the committee. 8. Team work. Everyone must be a team player, regardless of their background. 9. Delegation. Please divide your workload. What I would like to see in the future: The basic.congregational/jamaat prayer for all 5 daily prayers in the mosque without fail. I dont have to quote hadith on this, every Muslim knows the importance of this. I am not saying if there is anything wrong as of the past 3 years, but there are room for improvement. Transparency, clear communication. No hush hush. I want to see newsletter again. Tell us what is happening. Not everyone is on facebook. The website is also dead. Some of us are not computer literate, you know. The financials; I would like to see how we are doing. How much is coming in, where it was spent, etc.If you gave some money to a member of our community who was in need, that's good, but put it on record. Many years ago we put the financial statement on the noticeboard. You see, I dont have high expectations. I am not asking you to set up a school, community gathering for Eids or conferences etc. .

I arrived at the courthouse early, about 830am, considering that the proceeding doesnt start until 9am. Media people were waiting on the street in front of the courthouse. Entry was controlled, there were 4 security personnel at the door, and I was asked if I were among the victims and surivors, which I acknowledged. There were more security officers inside, and a few policemen. Handbags, wallets, cellphones have to be scanned, just like at the boarding gate at the airport. At the bottom of the escalator, I was met by two ladies ushers, and one of them accompany me to the courtroom 12. The main court was alrady filled up, only a few seats left. I chose a seat at the back by the wall. I want to be invisible. There was a Muslim court officer, probably from Auckland, Arif Rashid, who explained what was happening and court process to us. He wore purple kopiah on his head, and baggy pants Pakistani style and tailored suit top. I saw Rashid, Ashraf and Rosemary in front of me. I also recognised Alison and Becky from Victim Support, whom I met the first time yesterday afternoon. It was a while before the court officers and lawyers started to come in to take their places in front of the judge bench. Judge; Justice Manders. The hearing starts and the defendant appears on screen. A short stature white man, wearing grey sweatshirt. Short black hair, with noticeable receding hairline. The judge orders the media that they can only write on the proceeding, and not recording. The judge also said “no electronic filing” The case is formally known as, Crown vs Brendon Harrison Tarrant Prosecutor: Mr Zarifeh apply to amend charges, adding charges of Terrorism Suppression Act. Defending counsel: Mr Tait, on behalf of the defendant plead not guilty to all charges, and also not guilty to terrorism charge. Suppression order to the 51st charge of murder has been lifted Interim order of suppression of name has been lifted. For victims under the age of 18 years, the name suppression to continue. 2 lines here that cannot be written because of order of suppression. Trial date is tentatively to start on 4th May 2020, estimated between 6 weeks and 3 months. Mental health assessment of the defendant completed, deemed fit to stand trial. Suppression order for name of Mr Tuiyan lifted. 16 August 2019 is the next appearance in court. Formal written statement has to be given to the court on this date. Concern has been raised by members of Muslim community that the trial will be in Ramadan next year.

Nabi SAW Suruh Berkahwin Banyak Untuk Tambahkan Rezeki?

copy and paste dari blog asal http://bin-sahak.blogspot.co.nz/2014/08/benarkah-nabi-saw-suruh-berkahwin.html Benarkah Nabi SAW Suruh Berkahwin Banyak Untuk Tambahkan Rezeki? Rasulullah S.A.W. menyuruh lelaki itu berkahwin. "Kahwin lagi," jawab Rasulullah S.A.W. singkat. Kemudian dia berkahwin buat kali ketiga. Rasulullah tetap menyuruh berkahwin lagi. Sabda Rasulullah S.A.W. Lalu baginda mengarahkan dia berkahwin.” Wallahu a’lam. Lihat Tafsir Ibn Kathir.

The Girl from the Coast 2.

Gadis Pantai - Pramoedya Anantha Toer; I have been referring to this literary work a couple of times, but i have never had a chance of reading it. Not even once. I really like the title and the story. So I am reusing this title to tell the story of my late grandmother, Mariam binti Joyowarso, a 7 year old girl, whose mother died, and her father remarried. Shen then was adopted by her cousin and her sisters. They then migrated to Selangor fron Pekalongan. http://nooryahaya.blogspot.co.nz/2005/11/girl-fron-coast.html In the past week, my bother Basiron has set up a group through Whatsapp chat of the grandchildren and great grandchildren of our ancestor Haji Daud Marhakim/ Mat Karmin and Mariam Joyowarso. I am surprised that the extended family lives all over the country. Seeing names that are familiar from those old days, and new names of nieces and second and third cousins is overwhelming. Some of the asked, what was my grandfather Haji Daud look like. Well, he was tallish, even when he was ld as I remember him. He look like Uncle Rukimin Haji Daud. I was about 10 yrs old whe he died. One or two months before he died, me and my older sister visited him and grandmother Mariam. I remember him telling my sister Kak Salmiah to take care of herself, be good etc. That was basically his last sermon to my sister. A year or so before that my grandfather was hit my a car while crossing the road to the masjid at Batu Enam. He was hospitalised for a few days at Tg Karang. I remember this because I also visited him after school. He has never been healthy after that accident. As for my grandmother, Mariam, she was shortish, about 4.5 foot tall, dark complexion. She look like Auntie Nik, Rukinem Haji Daud. Last week, my brother met our cousin Asbiran bin Sarbini who lives in Kg Pandan, Kuala Lumpur. He is one of those whom we have heard of his name, but has never met in real life family cousin. When I was 6 years old, my parents took me on a bus trip to Parit Tiga, Sungai Burung Tanjong Karang. That was the first bus trip that I remember. My mother told me that Kang Yan (Asbiran) get married. It was an exciting trip, my uncle Rukimin, Auntie Normah, grandmother, Nasir and Saring, Kak Sal, Kak Salmah also came along. Uncle Sisar (Sarbini) house was a cute malay style house, painted pastel green within view from the main road. To this day I dont remember what Uncle Sisar look like, I probably have met him, but then I probably not, So I dont remember. I probably didnt pay much attention to the elders. The marriage reception was conducted that mid morning. I remember Kang Yan 'bersanding' in the front yard, close to the front stair of the house. He wore white tunic military style uniforn, just like you see one of the officer's uniform of the British Navy. Kang Yan was a robust size man, and by todays estimation about 80-90kg size, about 6 foot tall. His bride was skinnish, with skin complexion like a Chinese girl. The bride and groom also 'bersanding' inside the house, and peek through the open window. We were serve food afterward, rice and chicken curry, which was a luxury in those days. While we were eating, there was a bit of ruckus, a local boy had stepped on chicken shit (tahi lencong). I think I remember that local boy face, he was speaking Malay, skinny. Years later he was my friend in high school, Sekolah Dato Harun and Sekolah Teknik Kuala Lumpur. His name is Abdul Mutalib Ismail. Here it is, excerpt from "The Girl from the Coast" Title: The Girl from the Coast Sorry Bapak Pramoedya Anantha Toer, this is just the title, as you wrote about your grandmother. I also want to write stories told by my late maternal grandmother Mariam, and yes I don’t even remember my great grandfather’s name. She didn’t know how old she was, maybe about 6 year old, maybe older. She couldn’t tell me much about her family, only that she and my paternal grandmother, Rosni binti Mustapha are cousins. She told me that she came from town called Kalengan, by the coast of Jawa Tengah. (Later talking to Indonesian friends, they said its Pekalongan, a town on the northern coast of Jawa Tengah, I cross checked with her Ponorogo dialect, spoken by people in the vicinity). Her village was about 7 miles from town, in her own words, “from here (Batu 7) to Parit Tiga (Batu 12)”. In those days, probably circa 1925, there was weekly market in town, so her parents used to bring village produce to town. She used to tag along her parents on foot to town, starting at 1am; her parents sold village produce like tapioca etc. to buy rice and other stuff. Poverty was rife in those times, parents married off their young daughters, simply because they couldn’t afford to feed them. That year my paternal grandmother was about 16, she was married off to my paternal grandfather Kusni. (I do not know my great grandfather’s name). Another one of her cousins, Suci was married off as well. Mariam was given off to her cousin Rosni, to be taken care off by her two cousins who just got married. The bridegrooms and their young brides sailed to Port Klang on a kapal layar, sailing ship maybe about 20metres. During the voyage the two cousins, my grandmothers resign to the fact that they were leaving their homeland for good. Suci cried day and night, ruing the fact that she will never see her parents, family or her homeland ever again. It took about a week to arrive in Singapore, where they stopped for a day or so for provisions before continuing to Port Klang. From Port Klang to Tanjong Karang might have taken 2 days on kereta lembu. In those times, the government opened tracts of land in Tanjong Karang for padi and coconut. When Mariam was old enough, about 13, she was married off to my maternal grandfather, Daud bin Marhakim. Life couldn’t be better in Selangor, padi land to grow rice and coconut land for cash crop of coconut and bananas. The river also teemed with freshwater fish like sepat, keli, puyu, haruan and udang galah in those days, replenished with annual monsoon floods. According to Auntie Mariah, my grandfather used to grow tapioca and keladi on road reserve land near their house. There were a few fruit trees around their house, jambu, breadfruit and ciku among them, some of them survived until my childhood in the seventies. My paternal grandfather Kusni died when my father was 2 years old, leaving grandmother Rosni with two young children to feed, my father and Auntie Mariah, relying on the goodwill of her fellow immigrant neighbours. Presumably they were just 5 years in Selangor back then. If I could turn back time, I could have taken my grand mother Mariam on a tour back to her homeland.

Tiba tiba kawan lamanya Din duduk disebelahnya, setelah bersalaman dan bertanya khabar, Din tanya, "kau ingat tak Rashid, orang Malaysia kawan kita dulu?" "Rashid yang mana satu ye?" Berkeriut otak Ahmad memikirkan Rashid yang mana satu. Satu Rashid orang Kota Singa. Lalu Din menunjukkan gambar Rashid dalam phone nya. "Oh aku kenal yang tu, kawan satu kelas zaman dulu." kata Ahmad. "Dia dah seminggu di hospital, brain aneurysm kata nya, pembuluh darah kat otak pecah." kata Din. Stroke. Fikir Ahmad.

Lalu baginda bertanya adakah ubat penawarnya.
Dah lewatlah nak kena tidur ni...nanti aku sambung balik esok.

It has been Years....

It has been years since I wrote anything on these pages. Almost 3 years, my last post was in December 2013. A lot has happened in my life since then. One of them was that my last laptop crap out back then, and i couldnt afford to buy another one. (good excuse ha?) Well today is my birthday, and yesterday evening my wife and kids presented me with this new HP laptop. Let me keep you an update of whats happened, a wee bit. After the earthquake, our landlord told us to move out of the house that we were renting. Housing was in severe shortage back then, thousands of houses were damaged and unliveable. And we became homeless. Eventually a friend let us stay in their compound/backyard. We rented a caravan and parked it there. Aafter 3 months or so we found a house to rent again, move in there but later we found out that the landlord is a bitch.... So we had to move out again. And losing more money in the process. Thats life, deal with it. Three years later, I am still paying off the debt that we incurred during those days, and we still not even paying off a quarter of it. Our car broke down some 2 years back. We havent been able afford one since. As they say, when you are at the bottom of the hole, the only thing left for you to do is to look up.
